Prof. Tony Torres, a Brandon, Florida native, is the 7th Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, promoted by Prof. Joey Best of Tactics Jiu-jitsu during his 12 years of instruction at Ybor City Jiu-Jitsu Club.

Prof. Torres started his journey in jiu-jitsu in 2004 at the age of 12 when he was fortunate enough to receive lessons in mixed martial arts from Anthony "Danko" Wilson, the father of one of his lifelong childhood friends. It was during this time that he discovered his affinity for jiu-jitsu. Even though he practiced striking, as well as grappling, due to his smaller stature, he found himself increasingly depending on wrestling and jiu-jitsu to be able to hold his own against bigger kids in the neighborhood who took lessons as well. After some consideration, he realized that should-push-come-to-shove, in a real-life altercation, jiu-jitsu would be his trump card. There was only one problem with that.... He was still at the white belt, or beginner level of jiu-jitsu. Which meant that there was a multitude of people who had more skill in what he considered his "ace". It was then that he decided he would master the gentle art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At the age of 23, in 2015 Prof. Torres found his home with Instructors Prof. Joey Best and Prof. Johnny Weisser at Ybor City Jiu-Jitsu Club, where he was promoted all the way from a no-stripe white-belt to the 7th black-belt on March 2nd, of 2024. During his tutelage, he competed in both Gi and No-Gi tournaments, under many different rulesets, including IBJJF rules and adaptations, and sub-only rulesets. He has competed in countless local, regional, and out-of-state tournaments, as well as a few invitational tournaments and super-fights. He also has competed at every belt level. In addition to his competition expertise, Prof. Torres also has experience as a tournament referee having refed for organizations such as Grappling Industries, COPA, Arte Suave, and more.
